WINNIPEG – With the Canada Summer Games exactly one year away, the city has some very important construction deadlines looming.

The second phase of the southwest rapid transit way is expected to be finished by the time the games begin next July.

The dedicated bus corridor through the old Southwood Golf Course is expected to be built along with a pedestrian bridge, ramp and bus loop at Investors Group Field.

It’s being used during the closing ceremonies of the games and possible for other events as well.

“It is a very definite timeline and I like that. I think it puts an increased focus for all of us as a community to collectively rally and make sure we’re ready,” said Mayor Brian Bowman.

The Sport For Life Centre is also a key venue for the upcoming games.

It’s currently under construction in the east exchange district along with several surrounding roads and streets that are part of a redevelopment of the area.

Funding was rushed through City Hall earlier this summer in order to start work so it could be finished before the games.

In addition to these crucial projects, Bowman is still hoping to open up the intersection of Portage and Main to pedestrians before the games kick-off.

“We’ll see if that’s possible, we’ll do our best,” said Bowman.

There are no solid design plans for how the iconic intersection could be opened to traffic but Bowman said talks with affected business owners are underway.
