Severe thunderstorm warnings continue for central Alberta

It’s been an active Tuesday for severe weather across Alberta.

Much of central Alberta, including the Capital Region, was placed under a severe thunderstorm watch shortly before 3:00 p.m. At 5:39 p.m., a severe thunderstorm warning was issued by Environment Canada for areas south, east and northeast of Edmonton including the Edmonton International Airport.

The warning for EIA ended around 6:11 PM, though several other warnings remain active as of 6:15 PM.

Environment Canada meteorologists said the storm was “capable of producing very strong wind gusts, up to nickel size hail and heavy rain.”

People using the hashtags #yegwx and #abstorm were sharing photos of storms in the Edmonton area on social media.

A severe thunderstorm warning is issued when thunderstorms producing large hail, damaging winds or torrential rainfall are occurring.
