Sask. correctional centres off limits to Pokemon Go players warns ministry

Correctional centres off limits to Pokémon GO players warns Saskatchewan Ministry of Corrections. File / Global News

Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Corrections is asking Pokemon Go players to steer clear of correctional centres after individuals were observed wandering onto the grounds in the past 24 hours.

Drew Wilby, a spokesperson for the ministry, confirmed the facilities are patrolled and in some cases fenced off, but there is still a risk.

“It’s no secret that contraband comes into our facilities in many different ways. One of those ways is by packages being thrown over a fence so that’s a significant concern for us and for the way that we operate our facilities,” Wilby said.

The warning goes for prisons and youth correctional facilities.

“If we see someone on the other side, in particular at an open custody youth facility, the first instinct is to question whether that’s one of ours and we don’t want a negative interaction with especially young people . We want it to be positive and we don’t want to have to go and remove them from that area or have the police come in and remove them,” Wilby explained.

“We do know there are Pokemon hiding around some of them. Just leave those Pokemon be where they are.”

All correctional facilities in the province are considered private property. Many will be fenced off and will include signage.
