Construction on the new airport tunnel continues to speed along.
The city has now handed over a section of the tunnel to the airport authority, marking a major milestone in the project.
The handover means work can now begin on the runway over top of the 620 metre tunnel, which will accommodate six lanes of traffic and extend Airport Trail from Barlow Trail to 36 Street N.E.
“This is a major milestone as we move toward the completion of the tunnel,” said Gordon Stewart, Director of Transportation Infrastructure. “Project managers and work crews have done an outstanding job in meeting the tight construction schedule requirements and maintaining budget.”
All sections of the walls and roof will be poured this fall, then electrical and mechanical work can begin.
Roadway work is scheduled to take place next year, with the entire project set to be complete by May 2014.
