MONTREAL – The 62-year-old suspect arrested by police in connection with the Quebec election night shootings in Montreal has been identified as Richard Henry Bain.

There have been no charges laid in connection to the shooting, although the suspect is expected to be arraigned in court Thursday.

Bain is the owner of a fishing lodge about two hours north of Montreal in La Conception called RICK Activities and is featured briefly in his company’s promotional video, which has now been removed from YouTube.

Montreal police Cmdr. Ian Lafreniere confirmed early Wednesday morning that the gunman opened fire in the back of the Metropolis theatre while Parti Quebec leader Pauline Marois was giving her victory speech to hundreds of supporters.

Police say that they have no reason to believe there are further suspects.

The heavy-set man, wearing a black ski or balaclava mask, glasses and a blue bathrobe over a black shirt and black shorts, was arrested by police shortly after he threw an incendiary device towards the back of the theatre.

As he was being arrested and taken to the police cruiser, the suspect was heard to shout in French, “Les Anglais se réveillent” – loosely translated as “The English are awakening.”

Police have not identified what weapons were in Bain’s possession, however camera footage revealed that police discovered a pistol and a rifle at the scene.

Quebec provincial police have confirmed that a 48-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene and a 27-year-old man was wounded but will survive. A third man was treated for shock.

The victims have not been identified, but Global News has learned that they both worked with a Montreal-based production company called Productions du Grand Bambou Inc.

Flowers have been left outside the Metropolis theatre in downtown Montreal to commemorate the victims and a candlelight vigil is planned Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.

The crime scene remains inaccessible at noon on Wednesday, September 5, as police continue their investigation and have requested that those visiting the site respect the security perimeter.

Police are asking anyone with information about the suspect to call Info Crime at 514-393-1133.
