McDonald’s to open first vegetarian-only restaurants

TORONTO – U.S. fast-food giant McDonald’s is set to open its first two vegetarian-only restaurants.

The two outlets are due to open in Amristar and Katra in India sometime next year, reports the Financial Times.

Known for its beef-based burgers such as the Big Mac, McDonald’s has historically struggled to establish a strong presence in India as many Hindus revere cows as sacred and refrain from eating beef while Muslims traditionally do not consume pork.

“A vegetarian store makes absolute sense in the places which are famous as pilgrimage sites,” says Rajesh Kumar Maini, a spokesman for McDonald’s India.

Over the years, several locations have introduced both chicken and vegetable-based options, but the two vegetarian-only restaurants are the first of its kind for McDonald’s anywhere in the world. According to Kumar Maini, McDonald’s hopes the two new restaurants will appeal to more Hindus and Muslims who abstain from eating any kind of meat.

Currently, India has 271 McDonald’s restaurants.

YOUR THOUGHTS: Would you eat at a vegetarian-only McDonald’s? Is this a good move by the fast-food giant to get more customers?
