Environment Canada issued a weather advisory for Edmonton and several surrounding communities Thursday night, saying funnel clouds were possible in the area.

The advisory was issued for Edmonton and much of the Capital Region at 8:16 p.m. The advisory was dropped later Thursday evening.

Several people took to social media Thursday night to share pictures of funnel clouds spotted in the northeast Edmonton and Fort Saskatchewan region.

Environment Canada said showers and thunderstorms with conditions favourable for the development of funnel clouds were occurring Thursday night, and multiple funnel clouds were reported in the province throughout the afternoon.

Environment Canada said these types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weather thunderstorms. The weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground, but there is a chance the rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.
