The 16-year-old girl has been charged with second-degree murder and made a brief appearance at Saskatoon provincial court on Monday. Her name cannot be released under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The infant’s great-grandmother, Eva Meechance, told reporters the accused should have known better.

“She hurt my great-grandson and I don’t like that, it hurts right here in my heart. I don’t hide nothing and I wanted her to go to jail for life,” Meechance said.

“I don’t want her to get charged for that … youth. I wanted her to get charged for adult.”
