Deadly Austin St North fire appears to be intentionally set: Police

WINNIPEG — A rooming house fire that killed two people in Point Douglas appears to have been intentionally set, according to Winnipeg Police.

The two victims are a 51-year-old woman and a 61-year-old man.

Flames could be seen on the front porch of the Austin St. North house before firefighters arrived on Thursday morning before 2 a.m.

The Homicide Unit is leading the investigation. At this point, “evidence points to the fire being deliberately set,” read a news release issued by Winnipeg Police on Friday afternoon.

There were nine people living in the rooming house and 15 were inside at the time of the fire.

Neighbours believed there was illegal drug activity taking place inside.

The fire occurred just a block away from another rooming house that killed five people in 2011.

That fire was intentionally set.
