Charlotte Sullivan plays a cop on TV every week and has portrayed one of the world’s most famous movie stars – but there’s one role she has a harder time getting into.
“I’m not a great schmoozer,” admits Sullivan, who is about to hit the TIFF circuit in a big way. “It’s not something that comes naturally to me. I’m not one who knows how to play that game.”
Sullivan, 28, is one of four people chosen for this year’s TIFF Rising Stars program, created in 2011 to showcase Canadian actors during the festival and give them opportunities to get up close to film industry insiders from around the world.

Describing the application video she submitted to TIFF as “a little bit quirky and a bit avant-garde,” Sullivan insists she’s humbled to have made the cut.
“I was chosen along with some other great people who are wildly talented and doing some pretty incredible things so I feel like I’m in really good company,” she says of fellow rising stars Tatiana Maslany, Charlie Carrick and Connor Jessup.
“I don’t have any expectations other than I want to embrace the adventure of meeting other artists and getting the chance to ask them questions. I really want to meet other women artists because I’m a bit of a feminist and I want to know what inspires them and how they do it all.”
As she does the TIFF rounds, Sullivan will be decked out in homegrown label Pink Tartan. “It’s wonderful because I don’t have to stress out about clothing.” But Sullivan won’t have much time to take in TIFF on her own. She’s busy shooting episodes for the fourth season of Global’s Rookie Blue, in which she plays officer Gail Peck.
Sullivan says she still isn’t used to being recognized by fans of the show. “Sometimes I lie and say it’s my sister,” she admits. “I don’t have a sister. I lie because I get nervous.”
She also gets recognized for playing Marilyn Monroe in last year’s controversial mini-series The Kennedys starring Katie Holmes and Greg Kinnear.
“I was petrified out of my mind,” Sullivan says of the role. “But you cannot say no to something like that.”
