One in custody after ‘suspicious’ Calgary church fire

The Calgary Police Service has one suspect in custody after fire crews battled flames at the Baptist Church on 13 Ave. and Olympic Way S.E.

The Calgary Fire Department received reports of smoke coming from the historic building at approximately 3:25 p.m. Wednesday. Crews were able to quickly knock out the flames, minimizing damage to the church.

Witnesses reported seeing a man leave the building prior to smoke being seen, leading emergency responders to deem the situation suspicious. Police have apprehended one suspect.

No one was injured in the incident.

Police are currently investigating to determine whether arson charges will be laid, according to a fire department spokesperson.
