UPDATE: Calgary Police lay charges in Cedarbrae death

Calgary police have charged a 27-year-old man in connection to a death in Cedarbrae over the weekend.

Police were called to the parking lot in front of Swigs Pub before 3 a.m. on Sunday, following reports of a fight.

They arrived to find a 41-year-old man suffering from serious injuries. He was rushed to hospital but later died.

Friends have identified the victim as Brian Ludwig, calling him a great father and family man. They say he was sucker-punched just once, and fell to the pavement.

An autopsy conducted on Monday determined the cause of death was blunt force trauma.

He has been remanded in custody and his next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012.

Police say this latest incident brings the total number of homicides in Calgary in 2012 to seven.

The staff at Swigs Pub tell Global News the incident is upsetting.

“Swigs is deeply saddened by the events of Saturday night. What began as a great day on our annual golf tournament turned into an awful tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Brian’s family and friends.”

The incident is similar to the fight that killed Devin Venables 10 years ago, outside of Dixon’s pub.

“It’s frustrating to hear that it’s happened again,” said his mother, Karen. “I know and I feel for his family, that it is so preventable.”

“Nine times out of ten you’re gonna give that other guy or your buddy a black eye,” she said. “But what if it’s that one time?”
