Swedish for “oops”: IKEA denies Winnipeg store plans on Twitter

Plans for Winnipeg’s highly anticipated new IKEA store appeared to have been abruptly cancelled Friday, at least according to the furniture giant’s Twitter feed.

“While we are continually reviewing our expansion plans in Canada, there are no plans for a store in Winnipeg at this time,” IKEA Canada tweeted this morning in response to a question from another Twitter user.

That came as a surprise to anyone familiar with the massive project at Kenaston Boulevard and Sterling Lyon Parkway, where the company is building a 400,000 square foot new store due to open later this year.

A spokesperson for IKEA Canada said later Friday that the tweet was a mistake by an agency that monitors the company’s Twitter feed. Like the chain’s furniture, many of its Twitter responses are prefabricated and require assembly. A “standard response” to questions about expansion plans was accidentally applied to Winnipeg.

Later Friday IKEA deleted that tweet and posted, “IKEA Canada is looking forward to opening our new Winnipeg location later this year!”
