Timeline: Deadly U.S. shootings in 2012

Twenty-eight people, including 20 children, in Newtown, Connecticut are dead in one of the worst school shootings in U.S. history.

The shooting is the latest in a deadly year south of the border.

December 14, 2012:  A gunman entered Sandy Hook Elementary School at 9:30 a.m. and opened fire, leaving 26 dead. Twenty of them were children, while six were adults. Another person was found dead at another location. The gunman eventually killed himself.

August 24, 2012: A gunman opened fire outside New York City’s Empire State Building killing two men, including himself. Nine others were injured in the shooting. Police identified the gunman as Jeffrey Johnson, 58. They said Johnson was laid off from a women’s accessories company last year and the victim was a former colleague.

August 23, 2012: Nineteen people were shot overnight in Chicago neighbourhoods in six different incidents. Thirteen of those hit were shot within a 30 minute period.

August 13, 2012: Three people, included in the gunman, were killed near the Texas A&M University campus. The violence started after a law enforcement officer delivered an eviction notice and was met by gunfire. Brazos County Const. Brian Bachmann and Thomas Alton Caffall were both pronounced dead in hospital. The third victim, Chris Northcliff, was caught in the crossfire and died. Four others were wounded.

August 5, 2012: A gunman opened fire on dozens of Sikh worshippers gathering at a temple in suburban Milwaukee. Six were killed and three injured as the gunman shot two people in the parking lot before moving inside. The gunman, later killed by police, was identified as Wade Michael Page, a former U.S. solider with ties to a white supremacist group.

July 20, 2012: A night out at the movies turned into tragedy for dozens of people in Aurora, Colorado in July. A gunman dressed in tactical clothing entered a midnight screening of the film The Dark Knight Rises, released tear gas and opened fire on the audience. Twelve people were killed and 58 others were injured. James Eagan Holmes was charged in the shooting. The case has yet to go to trial.

October 21, 2012: A gunman opened fire at a day spa where his wife worked in a community west of Milwaukee, killing three people and wounding four. The shootings set off a confusing, six-hour search for the gunman, shutting down many local businesses, until a county dispatcher said the suspect was found dead. It is believed that the gunman had a history of domestic abuse and it’s alleged that he had slashed his wife’s tires weeks earlier.
