Soon after Gordie Howe’s death, people started brainstorming online for ways Saskatoon could honour the late Mr. Hockey.

When Ward 1 Coun. Darren Hill asked in a Facebook post if the Circle Drive South Bridge should be renamed in honour of Gordie Howe, people overwhelmingly responded in favour.
Monday afternoon city council voted unanimously to rename the Circle Drive South Bridge after Gordie Howe, fast tracking the traditional naming process.
Howe’s family will need to give council it’s blessing, but if they approve, signage could be swapped out within three to four months.
Howe, who grew up in Saskatoon, passed away earlier this month.

This wouldn’t be the first bridge named after Howe. The international bridge between Windsor and Detroit, slated to open in 2020, will be named the Gordie Howe International Bridge. In Saskatoon a rink, football field, campground and sports complex carry Howe’s name.
