P.E.I. residents to get expropriation notices ahead of highway re-alignment

CHARLOTTETOWN – Prince Edward Island’s Transportation Department says expropriation notices will soon be issued to the last few holdouts in a re-alignment of the Trans Canada Highway, after the deadline passed to sell the government their land.

Spokesman Leo Creamer says as of Wednesday, there were still five landowners who hadn’t come to an agreement with the government.

Creamer says the government will expropriate those properties.

The land purchases are necessary for the province to start construction on the so-called Plan B highway re-alignment in Churchill.

That work is supposed to start in September.

The province expects to pay $4 million to buy the properties it needs for the project.
