WINNIPEG – It can be expensive to enroll your kids in sports.
The Southdale Community Centre increased its registration fee for sports like hockey from $85 per family to $110 per child.
The recreation centre recently expanded, building another indoor ice rink and claims the $6 million expansion ballooned to $9 million because of construction delays.
President Todd Thornton says in order to pay off their $3.2 million debt they must raise fees mainly for the hockey program.

Instead of a flat $85 per family annual fee, each child that plays hockey over the age of 9 will pay 110 dollars. That’s just for registration at the club. It’s another $400-$550 to the hockey association.
At River Heights Community Club the registration fee or “participation fee” is $15. Plus the cost to the hockey association which varies from $375 to $525.
Outside the city, kids who play hockey in Lorette pay a $50 registration fee plus $475 to $775. And in the town of Altona, there is no registration fee, just the cost to the hockey association and that varies between $125 to $350.
At Southdale, officials say they’re seeing so much demand for their facility, the upgrades were necessary and therefore there was no option but to forward the cost onto the people who will use the facility. However, they promise there will not be any other increases.
