One of the main priorities for Lethbridge Family Services in recent months has been helping Syrian Refugees settle in Lethbridge. Now the service is getting a substantial grant to help make the transition easier.

The Community Foundation of Lethbridge and Southwestern Alberta announced it is donating $50,000 through a Welcome Fund Grant to Lethbridge Family Services Immigrant Services.

“We are happy to join community foundations across the country in supporting refugee settlement efforts,” Community Foundation President Denis Hatt said in a statement. “We partnered with Lethbridge Family Services to ensure this funding will have the greatest impact possible.”

Half the money will go towards housing needs, while the other $25,000 will be spent on much-needed children’s shoes, as well as bicycles for the children and families.

The Welcome Fund was established by the Community Foundations of Canada (CFC) in December 2015 to address the need for permanent and affordable housing for Syrian refugees.
