During the summer there’s no better way to cool down than hitting the pool. Now pooches are going to have the same opportunity, for one day only.

On Sunday, June 26, Jamie Platz Family YMCA will open its swimming pool to dogs, before it is drained for annual cleaning.

A $12 donation is required for each dog. The proceeds will go towards the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign.

“The campaign is to ensure that families, children and families, can experience YMCA programs and services where they otherwise couldn’t afford to do it,” Asim Chin, centre manager, said. “A lot of people don’t know that we’re a charity and so it’s a great way to raise awareness through the general appeal of dogs in a swimming pool.”

Chin said facilities in eastern Canada and parts of the United States have run similar programs, opening up their pools for pooches, but it’s never been done at an Alberta YMCA. And because the pool has to be drained for cleaning, filter work and other scheduled maintenance, the YMCA thought why not try something new.

“We’re draining the pool anyway, this water doesn’t go through our filters or anything so there’s no impact on the safety for both our members in future use, current use, or for the dogs,” Chin said.

The YMCA will see how this event goes and possibly open it up to other animals in the future.

“For our first event, dogs tend to be the most appealing and wide-reaching animals in terms of pets,” Chin said.

All dogs must be accompanied by a handler over the age of 16, be on a leash when out of the water and have proof of current rabies vaccine. People will not be allowed in the pool with their pets.

The chlorine level in the pool will be lowered so it is safe for the animals.

The pool will be open between 10:30 a.m. And 3:30 p.m., with specific swimming times for small and big dogs.
