City may extend parking time limits in 3 Saskatoon commercial districts

Drivers may soon be able to park longer at a number of key Saskatoon commercial districts.

On Monday, the city’s transportation committee supported a measure to extend on-street parking limits to three hours in the downtown, Sutherland and Broadway neighbourhoods.

The committee recommends the measures be in place for a year and then reviewed.

Supporters, including Brent Penner, the executive director of Downtown Saskatoon, say the move will allow consumers more freedom.

“Often times (shopping) it isn’t just at one store, it’s visiting three or four or five or six locations, grabbing a coffee while you’re deciding what to do, versus looking at your watch and having to run our and leave the district or find another stall,” Penner said.

The recommendation now goes to council and, if passed, the plan could be enacted by the end of the summer.
