Single vehicle crash in Fredericton prompts river search

A dramatic crash reported to Fredericton police just before 4 a.m. Friday has divers searching the waters of the Saint John River near St. Anne’s Point Drive.

A man was taken to hospital by ambulance following the crash and later released.

Police say they have reason to believe there was a second occupant of the vehicle — an adult female — who remains unaccounted for.

An underwater recovery team was dispatched to search the area.

The car left the road off St. Anne’s Point Drive near Regent Street, then careened through a wooded area near a small dock for recreational boats, police say.

The vehicle was extensively damaged.

The investigation is ongoing.

Fredericton police tweeted a photo early Friday afternoon of a person of interest they were hoping to identify in relation to the crash – however they later tweeted they were able to identify the person.

WATCH: Fredericton police are still looking for answers after a serious single vehicle collision. As Global’s Adrienne South reports, one man was injured and now the search is on for a possible passenger.
