It’s a controversial tool to catch distracted drivers recently adopted by Regina police: plain clothes police officers perceived as panhandlers are cracking down on distracted driving.

An officer dressed in plain clothes holding a cardboard sign watches for traffic violations. Then, with the help of two other officers, tickets are issued.

Regina Police Service isn’t alone in doing this. Other detachments across the country use similar tactics, including Vernon, B.C. and Steinbach, Man.

However, there are concerns over what this does to the public’s perception of panhandlers.
