The Saskatchewan government is serving up new legislation that it says will create a level playing field for all liquor retailers in the province.

Don McMorris, minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority, has introduced amendments that call for all liquor retailers to be treated the same.

The amended act would apply to purchasing alcohol for resale at a wholesale price, hours of operation, product selection and chilling of products.

There have been many different rules for how liquor is retailed by government stores, private stores, rural franchises and off-sale outlets.

McMorris says the proposed legislation contains the most significant changes in Saskatchewan’s liquor retailing in the last 50 years.

The Saskatchewan Party government has already said it plans to sell 40 of 75 government-owned liquor stores and add 12 new private stores.

“These 52 retail opportunities will be awarded through a competitive request-for-proposal process which will be announced in the coming weeks,” McMorris said Monday.

“Once implemented, this new liquor retail system will offer consumers more choice, convenience and competitive pricing.”
