8 Halifax schools receive provincial funding for repairs, upgrades

Eight schools in the Halifax area will receive provincial funding for upgrades and repairs for the 2016-17 school year.

A total of 25 schools will share in more than $6 million from the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development for things like roof repairs, fire safety improvements, the creation of new learning spaces and replacing boilers and windows.

“Our goal is to provide students and teachers with schools that are safe and well-equipped to meet their learning needs while working within the province’s fiscal plan,” said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Karen Casey.

“These repairs will help maintain and improve existing infrastructure in communities across the province.”

The eight schools receiving funding this year in the Halifax Regional School Board include:

  • Astral Drive Junior High School, Cole Harbour (masonry work and replacement of the shingled roof)
  • Beechville Lakeside Timberlea, Timberlea (continuation of roof replacement which started in 2015)
  • Bicentennial School, Dartmouth (window replacement, repair front entrance stone face, repair part of the roof and masonry repainting)
  • Eastern Shore District High School, Musquodoboit Harbour (grounds work and water quality study)
  • Gorsebrook Junior High School, Halifax (continuation of roof replacement which started in 2015)
  • Halifax West High School, Halifax (upgrade heat pumps)
  • St. Catherine’s Elementary, Halifax (window replacement)
  • William King Elementary, Herring Cove (partial roof replacement)

Halifax Regional School Board spokesperson Doug Hadley says the Board submitted approximately 40 projects worth between $150,000 and $1 million dollars. The ones that received funding were the top priority projects submitted.

The province has not yet made any announcements for projects worth more than $1 million submitted by school boards.
