RCMP officer injured during investigation of alleged street racing; suspect in custody

A police officer suffered minor injuries following a traffic accident in Burnaby on Wednesday morning.

The collision happened at about 11:30 p.m. on June 1 when a Port Mann Traffic Service officer was in the middle of conducting a traffic stop involving two vehicles that were allegedly street racing westbound on Highway 1, between North Road and Gaglardi Way.

According to police, the officer was inside his vehicle investigating the alleged street racing when he was struck from behind. The driver of the suspect vehicle fled the scene on foot.

An attempt was made to track the suspect by a Police Dog Service officer but they were unable to locate him.

Police now have the male suspect in custody and are continuing to investigate.

The RCMP officer that was struck was taken to hospital with minor injuries and later released.

Along with investigating this crash, police are continuing to look into the alleged street racing incident.
