‘They come back stronger leaders’: Camp Day fundraiser helps send Edmonton kids to camp

Picking up a cup of Joe at Tim Hortons Wednesday morning not only fuelled you for the day – it was also for a good cause.

June 1 was Camp Day at Tim Hortons locations across the country, including in Edmonton.

One hundred per cent of proceeds from coffee sales go to the Tim Horton Children’s Foundation, which sends children from low-income families to camp for free. Campers are between the ages of nine and 12.

The fundraiser is in its 25th year. Last year, it raised enough money to send 19,000 children to camp.

Todd Peerless, branch manager of the Tim Hortons in Old Strathcona, has visited the camps several times.

“It shows [the kids] what’s available. It gives them a chance to build confidence, build self-esteem in themselves and be a part of a group,” he said.
“Some of these kids are very shy. Ten days later, they come out [and] their heads are held high.”

Gail Hanasyk, camper selection coordinator at St. Bonaventure Elementary School, said 10 children from the school are attending camp this summer. There are seven camp locations across the country, including one in Kananaskis, Alta.

“There’s low ropes, there’s archery, there’s hiking, there’s camping. The children do horseback riding, white water rafting,” she said.

But beyond the physical activities, she said there is opportunity for immense personal growth and development, adding it can be life-changing for the children.

“They come back stronger leaders. We see in our school, the children that go to camp have less conflict than they would have had or did have before they go because they’ve learned skills and how to deal with people,” Hanasyk said.
