As Fort McMurray residents get ready to head home, four Kelowna Salvation Army volunteers are making the 14-hour drive to the Alberta city to lend a helping hand.

Their task: to help feed front-line workers.

The four will be running a food truck for the next seven days to help fuel first responders and front-line workers.

“The most important thing is people there stay healthy,” said Sonia Withers with the Salvation Army. “We know food has been contaminated because of smoke and other things in the air.”

Volunteer Danny Way said he isn’t sure what to expect once he arrives in Fort McMurray. “I’ve fought urban fires in the past, but never seen anything like this devastation. It’ll be eye opening.”

Over the next week the group will provide meals for some 160 workers.
