Police have charged two teenagers with arson after a Vaughan grocery store was set on fire, causing millions of dollars in damages over the weekend.
Police say the youths walked into a Longo’s store in the Weston Road and Rutherford Road area around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday and proceeded to light a potato chip bag on fire before fleeing the scene.
Firefighters managed to get the fire under control and no injuries were reported.
York Regional Police say a security camera image of the youths released to the public helped in their capture. Both turned themselves in on Monday and were arrested without incident.
A 15-year-old from the Town of Bolton and a 14-year-old from Vaughan are charged with arson. Their identities cannot be released under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
It’s estimated the damage to the store is in excess of $2 million.
