OTTAWA – The federal Liberals say they plan to seek public support for any reforms they propose to Canada’s electoral system.

But the threshold for that support, and how it will be achieved, remains unclear.

The Conservatives continued to press their case today in question period for a Canada-wide referendum on electoral reform before a new system is put in place.

Liberal parliamentary secretary Mark Holland brushed aside the call.

However, Holland does acknowledge that there needs to be consensus on whatever changes are adopted.

Democratic Institutions Minister Maryam Monsef told the Toronto Star on the weekend that the government won’t go ahead with any changes without broad buy-in from voters.
