MONTREAL – After promising not to raise fares for the first six months of the year, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) has announced prices will be going up starting July 1, in order to stay “consistent with the 2016 budget.”
“The members of the board, after agreeing to keep fares untouched for the first six months of the year, have approved the fare adjustments,” said Philippe Schnobb, Chairman of the STM Board of Directors.

According to the STM, the price hikes are the smallest since 1998 and the lowest in North America.
Luc Tremblay, general director of the STM, explained the hike is due to increased costs, but insists the agency is giving customers better service.
“We’ve delivered bus service as planned, metro disruption is down 28 per cent and complaints are down 26 per cent,” he told Global News.
