Man arrested after escaping courtroom prisoner box in Guelph, Ont.

GUELPH, Ont. – A 22-year-old man’s bid for freedom didn’t last long when security officers in Guelph, Ont., thwarted his attempted escape from a courthouse.

Guelph police say the man was attending a bail hearing on Wednesday afternoon when he jumped out of a courtroom’s prisoner box, pushed an officer out of the way and took off.

They say he was soon tracked down by court security after a brief foot pursuit.

Police say a special constable suffered scrapes during the arrest.

The Guelph man has been charged with escaping lawful custody and assaulting a peace officer.

He will once again appear at bail court on Thursday.
