RCMP investigating fatal shooting near Desmarais

 In the early hours of Monday, July 30th, Desmarais RCMP members were called to a reported shooting at a residence located on Highway 754, on the Big Stone Cree Nation, just outside of Desmarais.

Police and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) found a man in his early 20’s, suffering from what appeared to be a gunshot wound. He was transported to hospital but later died of his injuries.

“The investigation is still very much in its preliminary stages”, said Staff Sgt. Shawn LeMAY, of Alberta RCMP’s “K” Division.

“It is not certain at this time if the victim in this tragic incident was the intended target. Our investigators are speaking to witnesses , looking at every possibility, and are not ruling anything out.”

RCMP Serious Crimes Branch has taken the lead on the investigation with a number of units assisting, including the Forensic Investigations Unit, Police Dog Service, and other coordinated police resources from other units.

While no arrests have been made yet, investigators are currently following up on all leads. Investigators are not releasing the name of the deceased at this time.

The investigation continues.
