Officer-involved shooting near Portage la Prairie leaves one injured

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Man — Manitoba RCMP said one man is in hospital after an officer-involved shooting just south of Portage la Prairie.

Just after 10 a.m. an officer responded to reports of an erratic driver near Portage. RCMP said the driver refused to stop and the officer ‘used his car’ to force him to come to a stop.

RCMP Sgt. Bert Paquet didn’t reveal what lead to the officer drawing his weapon and firing but said, “The fact that we did recover a firearm from the suspect’s vehicle tends to explain some of how the scenario unfolded.”

“During the interaction between the suspect and the officer, the officer discharge his service firearm,” Paquet said.

A 30-year-old man from Winnipeg was shot and transported to hospital near the intersection of Highway 240 and Highway 1. He is in hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Few further details were released regarding the incident.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) will take over the investigation.

“This is a worst case scenario for any of us. starting a shift you do not expect to use your firearm, it is always the last thing you want to do. But there some situations that dictate a response like this,” Paquet said.

The RCMP first tweeted about the incident south of Portage la Prairie at 1 p.m.

Highway 1 East at Manitoba Highway 240 is currently closed.
