MUHC withdraws from plan to build $25-million medical complex

MONTREAL – Faced with unyielding opposition by both the city of Montreal and the Quebec government, the McGill University Health Centre announced Wednesday it is withdrawing its plan to build a $25-million medical complex at 1750 Cedar Ave.

The MUHC has decided instead to sell the property it acquired from developer Vincent Chiara after a complex real-estate transaction was revealed last year.

Heritage Montreal released a statement Wednesday morning praising the MUHC for respecting the city’s decision to reject the project.

The complex would have been built next to the Montreal General Hospital, which is undergoing renovations. The city rejected the project, in part, because it said the MUHC violated a heritage pact to protect Mount Royal.

The property at 1750 Cedar was initially approved as a condominium development.
