Tornado destroys house near Smeaton, Saskatchewan

It was a close call for a homeowner near Smeaton, Saskatchewan yesterday evening.

A tornado destroyed a home outside the community located approximately 195 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.

Emergency crews were called to the house after receiving reports a man has missing after the twister had ravaged his yard.

He was found with minor injuries.

“When we arrived on the scene, there was a story-and-a-half house that was right off the basement,” said Lyle White, Chief of Smeaton Fire and Rescue.

“The west wall and roof were gone, the garage is gone.”

White says machinery was also damaged and debris was spread across the yard.

The tornado went through three farms in the area.

Witnesses say the tornado touched down around 7:30 p.m.

Environment Canada as not yet confirmed a tornado caused the damage.
