Fort McMurray wildfire: Air quality statement for Saskatoon, northwest Sask.

Smoke from the Fort McMurray wildfire has led to a very high health risk in Saskatchewan, according to Environment Canada. As a result, Saskatoon and the surrounding area, along with the Battlefords, Prince Albert, Meadow Lake, Buffalo Narrows and La Loche areas have been placed under a special air quality statement for poor air quality and reduced visibility.

The special air quality statement from Environment Canada says, “Smoke near the ground is causing very high health risk conditions.”

Environment Canada says particularly areas closer to the fire source and near the Alberta border will see deteriorated air quality.

The Cold Lake reporting site was reporting air quality health index readings off the charts as of noon Thursday.

Hazy skies have been seen across the province so far today with smoke and ash being reported in the Meadow Lake area.

High levels of particulate matter may persist locally until the fire is extinguished or controlled.

Individuals may experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath. Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk.

Saskatchewan’s chief medical health officer, Dr. Saqib Shahab, said healthy people typically don’t experience symptoms, but should also reduce or reschedule strenuous outdoor activities if smoke levels are high.
