Fort McMurray wildfire: Politicians, athletes react to emergency on social media

WATCH ABOVE: On Tuesday, Alberta Premier Rachel Notley spoke about the ongoing wildfires and evacuations in place for the area of Fort McMurray. Notley said she knows that it’s a “very scary time...a very, very stressful time” for people having to leave their homes under the current conditions. However, the government’s priority at the moment is “ensuring the safety of people,” getting them out of the city and stopping the fire – May 3, 2016

With a wildfire situation in Fort McMurray rapidly and significantly deteriorating, politicians and professional athletes were among those reacting to the ongoing state of emergency on Tuesday afternoon.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke to Alberta Premier Rachel Notley by phone Tuesday afternoon. Earlier he had tweeted asking Fort McMurray residents to “stay safe and remember to follow evacuation orders.”

The Edmonton Oilers hockey club posted “#OilCountry is rallying around you. Stay safe, everyone” on its twitter page while Ottawa Senators defenceman Chris Phillips, who began his junior hockey career in Fort McMurray, tweeted “Praying for my family, friends and everyone in #ymm to be safe.”

YMM is the airport code for the Fort McMurray International Airport.
