MONTREAL – May Day anti-capitalist protesters stood off against Montreal police in front of the Guy police station Sunday afternoon.
Police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd following what police say were criminal acts.
Over a thousand protesters gathered in downtown Montreal at 2 p.m in a rally organized by la CLAC.
In a written statement posted on the group’s website, the goal of today’s march was to “disrupt commercial activity dominated by the local bourgeosie.”
The protest started off with at least two groups in different parts of the city, until they merged on the corner of Robert-Bourassa and de Maisonneuve boulevards.
Heavy police presence followed the protesters.
There is no official word yet on arrests or injuries but protesters say two people were sent to hospital after police fired tear gas. One protester, apparently in a clown suit, was injured on the foot and the other, a woman, had difficulty breathing.
