Global BC and Corus radio stations partner to help raise over $58,000 for the Surrey Food Bank

Global BC successfully teamed up with Corus radio stations to help raise donations for the Surrey Food Bank on Friday.

In total, at least $58,000 and nine thousand pounds of food were raised on Friday.

The Surrey Food Bank is entering its leanest season. It is the time when supplies are running low, and the food bank is asking the community for support.

Over one thousand new residents move to Surrey every month, adding pressure on the food bank’s supplies.

An average of 250 low-income families receive food on a daily basis at the food bank. Forty-one per cent of the food bank’s clients are children under the age of 18.

The food bank has also served 121 Syrian refugee families since Feb. 1.

To raise awareness, BC1 broadcasted live from the Surrey Food Bank beginning at noon on Friday.

Viewers are encouraged to drop off their donations at the food bank until 7 p.m. or donate online anytime at www.surreyfoodbank.org/donate.

Here are the five most needed items at the moment:

  • Baby formula
  • Meal in a Tin
  • Canned Fish/Meat
  • Canned Vegetables
  • Whole grain rice/pasta

Donations of non-perishable items can also be dropped off at any of the large chain grocery stores in Surrey and North Delta or any Surrey Fire Halls.
