Two officers injured after bizarre incident Friday morning in Halifax

Police have charged 30-year-old Daniel David Males with several charges after a bizarre early morning police chase in Halifax.

Police were originally called to the Halifax waterfront, near the wave statue, after receiving a call of a white SUV that was damaging property in the area around 4:30 a.m.

Officers were able to locate the SUV near the area of Gottingen and Buddy Daye Streets. Instead of stopping for police, the SUV fled from police on the wrong side of the road up Creighton Street. It continued driving the wrong way along Charles Street and Maynard Street.

Police say because it is a residential area they did not pursue the vehicle.

The vehicle was later located in the area of Mic Mac Street and Huron Street, when officers approached the SUV and directed the driver to exit the vehicle, its alleged he sped towards them, trying to hit police. Officers were able to jump out of the way of the vehicle. Police say the driver then drove towards another police vehicle before fleeing the area towards Bayers Road.

The SUV then turned around and drove outbound along highway 102 in both the northbound and southbound lane with no lights on, while police continued to pursue it.

The vehicle came to a stop near the Hammonds Plains exit and the driver fled from the suv. The 30-year-old was chased by police and eventually arrested. The passenger of the vehicle, a 28-year-old man, was also arrested at the scene.

Police say one officer was treated for minor injuries by paramedics at the scene and another officer was taken to hospital for non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the vehicle was also taken to hospital to be treated for injuries.

Males has since been charged with assaulting a peace officer, flight from police, resisting arrest, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and impaired operation of a motor vehicle.

Charges against the passenger of the SUV are still under review.
