Edmonton’s population tops 817,000, census shows

 EDMONTON – Edmonton’s official population as of April 1 is 817,498, according to 2012 municipal census figures released Friday.

The city’s population has grown by 5,300 people since the federal census in 2011, the city reported.

Edmonton’s annual growth has averaged 12,000 since the last municipal census in 2009.

The 2012 census indicates the city continues to grow, with the largest proportion of Edmonton’s residents between the ages of 25 and 34.

“The growth in population indicates that Edmonton is a city of opportunity,” Mayor Stephen Mandel said in a news release.
