Deputy mayor Holyday under fire for controversial comments

TORONTO – Toronto’s deputy mayor Doug Holyday is under fire after comments he made at Thursday’s council meeting saying that downtown is no place to raise kids.

During a discussion of a motion requiring condo developers to add three bedroom apartments in their plans, Holyday was asked by fellow councillor Josh Matlow whether there was some danger to children living downtown, he replied, saying that, “It’s really not the ideal place where people might want to raise their families.”

Some councillors like Matlow and Adam Vaughan – who represents Trinity-Spadina, a downtown district – challenged Holyday on his controversial statement. Many residents felt that the comments fuel the fires of negative stereotypes associated with downtown living especially in regards to crime and traffic safety in the city.
