It’s time for some serious spring cleaning around Calgary

Residents drop off unwanted items at Glendale Community Centre Sunday. Mike Hills, Global News

CALGARY – The city started its annual community cleanup season at the Glendale Community Centre Sunday.

Volunteers and scouts were on hand to help people unload all sorts of junk.

Each spring and fall, the city teams up with community associations and their volunteers to help residents get rid of unwanted stuff.

The events are free and save people a trip to the landfill for those large items that don’t fit into black bins, like old sofas and yard waste.

Darcy Cairns with waste and recycling services said city garbage trucks will take extra bags of waste if they’re set beside black bins on the curb for pickup.

“Anything over, renovation material, lumber, stuff like that – we expect residents to bring that either here or they can take it to the landfill,” Cairns added.

Some of the things they aren’t accepting at the community clean ups include tires and home appliances.
