Spring renewal: Winnipeg’s city-wide cleanup kicks off Sunday night

WINNIPEG — The dreary days of winter are over but as any Canadian knows, the salt and dirt left over on the roads can be an eyesore.

The City of Winnipeg is launching its spring cleaning operation on Sunday night and it is expected to last over the next five to six weeks. It is focusing on removing the large build-up of sand and litter that has gathered over the winter months.

In a news release, the city said the operation will cost $6 million and will target major routes, bridges and sidewalks.

Jim Berezowsky, manager of streets maintenance said in a news release, “Each year city crews clean up more than 45,000 tonnes of sand and debris from streets that have accumulated. Berezowsky also warned drivers and pedestrians to be aware of trucks and heavy equipment on city streets over the coming weeks.

Residents will also want to be on alert for where they park their cars. Temporary “no parking” signs have been placed on some streets to open up access in cleaning operations. Drivers may find their cars ticketed and towed if vehicles are found parked in prohibited areas.

Spring counts as the one time per year the city sweeps paved back lanes.
