Woman who tried to rescue toddler grandson from drowning dies in hospital

SURREY, B.C. – A Surrey, B.C., woman who was clinging to life after trying to rescue her 20-month-old grandson from drowning has died in hospital.

The victims have been identified as Ivan Yousif, aged one year, eight months and his grandmother Ms. Warina Nissan, aged 51 years.

RCMP Sgt. Drew Granger says Nissan had been on life support but died Monday night, a day after the tragic incident in a private swimming pool.

Ivan died at the scene despite CPR efforts by residents at the apartment complex, and paramedics were also unable to revive him.

Granger says the coroner’s service is now investigating.

Meanwhile, Oliver RCMP say a 32-year-old woman is believed to have drowned Monday night on Gallagher Lake after falling out of a paddle boat.

Sgt. Ken Harrington says witnesses tried to perform CPR before the woman was taken to hospital and that alcohol and prescription drugs are believed to be contributing factors in her death.
