The busy roads this long weekend once again proved to be fatal on Sunday, when a head-on collision northwest of Fort Saskatchewan claimed one man’s life.

The crash happened just after 11 a.m. this Canada Day on Highway 37 at Highway 825. A man was heading east when his pick-up truck collided at the intersection with a truck traveling in the opposite direction.

The lone driver of the pick-up truck was pronounced dead at the scene. The five people in the other vehicle were not injured.

RCMP say alcohol does not appear to be a factor but are investigating whether either of the drivers may have been distracted, or if speed was a factor.

The victim’s name is not being released at this time.

By Saturday evening, there had been one serious crash in Edmonton that left three people injured and Yellowhead Trail shut down for hours, as well as three fatal collisions on Alberta highways.

The first crash happened around midnight on Saturday in Grand Prairie. It was a rollover that left a 31 year-old man dead. RCMP are still trying to determine whether drugs or alcohol were factors.

Shortly after that around 2:30 a.m., a 49 year old man was killed in a hit and run southeast of Edmonton near the town of Innisfree. RCMP say the man was crossing the highway on foot when he was struck by a van that fled the scene. RCMP are still looking for the suspect and the car, which is described as a 1990 to 1995 dark green Dodge Caravan with extensive front end damage.

Later that morning, at about 8 a.m., another crash claimed the life of a 21 year-old woman north of Edmonton on Highway 2, just east of Westlock. Officers say the woman pulled into the ditch and when she tried to pull back onto the highway, she lost control, crossing into the northbound lane where she was struck by a semi-truck. Speed and alcohol were not factors in that crash.

Then Saturday afternoon, a two-vehicle collision involving a rolled tractor trailer on the QE2 between Blackfalds and Lacombe partially closed down the highway.

That evening near Hinton, a toddler was killed after being struck by a vehicle.
