ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – A lawyer in Newfoundland and Labrador is looking for a second doctor to approve his client for the province’s first court approved assisted death.
Kyle Rees of St. John’s says his unnamed client is a man over the age of 65 who has been dying of prostate cancer for a number of years.
Rees says the man is in great pain and has exhausted all avenues of potential treatment including palliative care.

He says before he can move ahead, he needs a signed affidavit from a doctor other than his client’s attending physician, and so far that’s proving difficult.
Rees says he wants to show others that it is possible to seek a physician assisted death, although the case is about more than setting a precedent.
He says in the end it’s about helping his client by giving him peace of mind.
