CALGARY – Thursday morning’s rain in southern Alberta was a refreshing change to the dry conditions that have persisted for a couple of months now.
Despite the recent precipitation, March 2016 will go down as a particularly dry month compared to the thirty-year average for Calgary.
Little rain and snow in March was a continuation of February conditions that matched forecast expectations due to a strong positive El Nino.
El Nino is expected to remain in a positive phase for spring and could therefore influence a continued dry spell into June in Alberta.
This, as the rainiest months of the year for Calgary lie ahead; April and May generally assist in building toward the wettest month in June when an average of 94mm falls. Heavy rains in June 2013 set the stage for record flooding in Calgary and other areas of Alberta.
