Police believe the thieves had planned their robbery well in advance, knowing exactly what they were going to take.

“From the time we received the alarm, to the time that we were here was only a matter of minutes. So you know they came in they took this doghouse full of money and were out before we even arrived,” said Sgt. Kevin Holbrook of the Gainesville Police Department.

The animal shelter operates as a non-profit that lives on donations to help rescue and shelter abandoned animals.

“When you’re working really hard for the community and trying to help out, this sort of hurts because we try really hard for our donations and every dollar we get is well-used,” said Julie Edwards, the executive director for the shelter.
