CALGARY – An AK-47 and $57,000 worth of illegal narcotics were seized by police during a drug investigation last week.
The fully automatic assault rifle, which is banned in Canada, was found by officers executing a search warrant on a Panorama Hills apartment. Police say they also found 48 rounds of ammunition and $57,000 worth of cocaine, methamphetamine, and heroin.
The seizure was made on March 22 during a joint investigation between Calgary police and the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT).
Officers executed a second search warrant at an apartment in Kensington on the same day.
Items seized at the locations included:
- 229 g of cocaine
- 35 g of methamphetamine
- 69 g of heroin
- 1.4 kg of benzocaine cutting agent
- $23,450 cash
Officers say they also found packaging materials, digital scales, score sheets and other drug trafficking paraphernalia. The total value of drugs and cash seized was over $80,000.
One person was arrested.
Police charged Norman Sunaryo, 25, with 15 offences including possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession of proceeds of crime and unauthorized possession of a firearm.
Investigators said the AK-47 will be submitted for forensic analysis and ballistics to determine if it was used in any crimes.
